Setting up a Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) Laboratory in an academic research environment came with many challenges and was a steep learning curve.
What quality systems needed to be put in place? What storage is needed? Is our equipment fit for purpose? All aspects we needed to take into consideration and put into action to allow us to perform clinical trial sample processing and analysis to the regulatory requirements needed.
Initially starting as a small team of three, with a similar number of clinical trials, the laboratory was set up in the CRUK Drug-DNA Interactions Group, Department of Oncology at University College London, UK.
A visit was set up so we could see Freezerworks in action.... and we were sold - we have never looked back.
Sponsor-led audits considered Freezerworks to be "best practice" in sample management for our trials allowing full traceability from receipt, storage, analysis, and transfer.
Now in 2024, we are the UCL ECMC GCLP Facility, an accredited GCLP Facility within the UCL Cancer Institute, UCL managing over 25 clinical trials. As a standalone facility, we were specifically designed for clinical trial sample handling, analysis, and storage.
